"Reset" is how long it takes to get a trick ready to perform again. An instant reset trick can be performed again immediately, for the next group, with no preparation. Other tricks need a few seconds, or have to be reset off-stage. Reset time matters most if you perform for many groups in a row.

Why reset matters

Imagine you're at a party and a new group asks to see the trick you just showed their friends. With an instant-reset trick, you're ready. With a trick that needs an off-stage reset, you'll have to excuse yourself, or simply say no. For strolling magicians, bartenders, and anyone performing for group after group, reset can matter as much as the trick itself.

Reset levels explained

Reset level What it means Best for
Instant reset Ready to perform again immediately Strolling, parties, repeat performances
Under 10 seconds A quick, discreet adjustment Casual performing between groups
Under 30 seconds A short reset, usually out of sight Table-hopping with short breaks
Off-stage reset Must be reset away from the audience Planned shows and one-off moments

Reset vs. setup: not the same thing

These two terms are easy to mix up:

Which reset level do you need?

  • Beginners: instant reset is easiest. You can practise and perform again and again without fuss.
  • Strolling and party performers: stick to instant or under-10-second resets.
  • Stage performers: off-stage resets are fine, since each trick is usually performed once per show.
  • Consumable effects: some tricks, like flash paper, use up material with every performance. Budget for refills.

Frequently asked questions

What does "instant reset" mean in magic?

It means the trick is ready to perform again immediately after you finish, with no preparation.

What's the difference between reset and setup?

Setup is a one-time preparation before you first perform. Reset is what you do between performances to make the trick ready again.

Are instant-reset tricks better?

They're more convenient, especially for repeat performances, but some of the strongest effects need a longer reset. Choose based on how and where you perform.
